THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING

The terms "Technology" and "Engineering" is often found to be confusing and used interchangeably even among Engineers, scientists and other groups of learned people, perhaps because they are all basically ways of doing the same thing, but the reality is that there's a difference between them.

Now let's the discuss the definitions of both, explain the things they share in common and come up with the differences in conclusion.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Engineering is defined as the application of science to the optimum conversion of the resources of nature to the uses of humankind.

Whereas technology is defined as the the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization. It's also defined as the systematic way of solving problems and creating things for the benefit of mankind.

Here there's something in common and equally something in different with the definitions of the above two terminologies, can you figure them out?

OK let's look at them

The thing in Common is that both Engineering and Technology are way of doing things and solving problems for the benefit of humanity, while the difference is however Engineering applies the knowledge of scientific findings to do that, Technology doesn't necessarily follow the same process.

Thus both the lay man applying a wooden bridge across an open canal for people to cross-over easily and an Engineer designing a concrete slab to serve the Same purpose are trying to solve problems, but, where's the lay man requires little or no calculations and considerations, the Engineer must use his knowledge of physics like newtons laws in addition to his knowledge of mathematics to achieve the same aim as the lay man.
